The STAR Center’s Building Together Project

AmeriCorps VISTA is a program that started over 40 years ago.
VISTA stands for Volunteers In Service To America and is a lot like the PeaceCorps.  Instead of serving overseas, however, AmeriCorps VISTA Members are placed at non-profit organizations within the United States.  VISTA Members are considered full-time volunteers and serve for one year (members can serve up to 3 years).  Benefits of service include a monthly living stipend, health benefits, and money to pay off student loans.  These benefits do not affect any other income such as SSI, public housing, Food Stamps, WIC, etc.

3 Positions are now available.

VISTA Member for Software Development

Improve the knowledge of individuals using The STAR Center’s database through the development of personalized training tools.  In order to accomplish this goal, the VISTA Member will develop and implement a plan to insure the current accuracy of organizational information, identify areas where further software development is needed, and develop satisfaction survey tools.

VISTA Member for Volunteer Coordinator

Recruit, coordinate, and organize volunteers of The STAR Center programs and special events.  In order to accomplish this goal, the VISTA Member will organize the volunteer program so that all departments have the volunteer staff that they need when they need them, ensure that there are procedures in place to maintain organization, speak at public functions about events and programs of The STAR Center, and create a vital, visual and viable position in community affairs so that The STAR Center may maintain a positive influence in the Jackson, West Tennessee area.

VISTA Member for Alliance for Technology Access (ATA)

Enhance ATA’s services for vendors and members through development of public relations and marketing plans, and identification of new community members, vendors, and funding sources.  In order to accomplish this goal, the VISTA Member will develop marketing materials and a distribution process, research new funding sources including grants and other resources, develop and implement surveys and monthly reports, and create a plan to ensure that ATA’s website is updated on a regular basis.

The STAR Center’s Building Together Project
places Americorps*VISTA members with non-profit organizations that work with children and adults with disabilities statewide.  These VISTA members will work to build the capacity of the individual organizations where they serve and collaborate with other VISTA members on the development of resources, trainings, and related projects. Through their service, the Building Together Project 's VISTA members will endeavor to build a network that facilitates collaboration, support, and the sharing of ideas among a diverse group of participating organizations.
